Extra 330LX

The Extra 330LX is a high-performance, two-seat aerobatic aircraft renowned for its exceptional maneuverability, robust construction, and precise handling characteristics. Designed by Walter Extra, this aircraft is a derivative of the legendary Extra 300 series, but with enhancements that make it particularly well-suited for Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT).

Aerodynamic Superiority for UPRT

The Extra 330LX is built with a lightweight yet incredibly strong carbon fiber and steel tube fuselage, allowing it to withstand extreme aerodynamic loads—up to +10G and -10G. Its high roll rate of approximately 400° per second ensures that pilots can experience and recover from rapid attitude changes with minimal delay.

Engine and Performance

Powered by a Lycoming AEIO-580 engine, producing 315 horsepower, the 330LX delivers instantaneous power that helps pilots simulate and recover from various upset scenarios effectively. The aircraft’s low-inertia, high-thrust-to-weight ratio makes it an ideal platform for training pilots to handle real-world upsets, where precise energy management is critical.

Flight Characteristics for UPRT

  • Predictable Stall and Spin Behavior: The aircraft provides a forgiving stall response while still allowing controlled spins and recoveries, making it an excellent training tool for unexpected aerodynamic upsets.
  • Symmetrical Wing Design: The Extra 330LX’s zero-lift airfoil ensures neutral handling characteristics, reducing unexpected roll or pitch coupling, which is essential for realistic upset recovery scenarios.
  • Excellent Low-Speed Handling: Unlike traditional training aircraft, which can mask certain aerodynamic behaviors, the Extra 330LX clearly demonstrates adverse effects such as high-angle-of-attack instability and post-stall gyrations, crucial for pilot awareness.

Why It’s the Ideal UPRT Platform

  1. Extreme Agility – The rapid roll and pitch response allow instructors to simulate real-world upsets accurately.
  2. High Structural Integrity – Capable of handling aggressive control inputs and high-G loads without compromising safety.
  3. Unmatched Power-to-Weight Ratio – Enables effective recovery even in high-stress scenarios.
  4. Dual Control Setup – Instructors can easily demonstrate, guide, and assist trainees through complex recovery maneuvers.
  5. 5.Confidence-Building – Exposes pilots to extreme attitudes in a controlled environment, reinforcing correct recovery techniques and reducing panic responses.

Conclusion

The Extra 330LX is more than just an aerobatic performer—it’s a dynamic, purpose-built tool for modern UPRT programs. Its high-G endurance, rapid maneuverability, and predictable aerodynamic responses make it an indispensable asset for preparing pilots to recognize and recover from potentially hazardous flight conditions.
